King Family vintage wins Governor’s Cup for red wine

The King Family Vineyards 2007 Meritage has won the 2010 Virginia Governor’s Cup for red wine.
Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the winner Friday at the Virginia Wine Expo in Richmond. Judging for award took place Jan. 23 at Lansdowne Resort.
The winning wine is a blend that includes 56 percent Merlot, 20 percent Petit Verdot, 16 percent Cabernet France and 8 percent Malbec. King Family Vineyards, based in Crozet, produces about 5,000 cases of wine annually.
Judging for white wines will take place later this year and will be announced during October, which is Virginia Wine Month.
Virginia has 157 wineries and 270 vineyards. The state ranks seventh in the country in U.S. wine production.
