Kaine to announce transportation proposal
- April 30, 2008
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has said he will unveil his own transportation funding plan in about 10 days and it may include an additional gas tax.
Virginia currently charges a 17.5 cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline. Kaine’s plan may also include an additional 3 percent sales tax on cars.
The General Assembly is expected to meet in June to devise a new transportation plan. About half of the funding the legislature passed in 2007 was lost this year due to the repeal of abusive driver fees and a ruling that struck down regional tax plans in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. A weakening economy has also left the Virginia Department of Transportation’s six-year budget with a $1 billion shortfall.
