McLean-based ITT Exelis officially opened a design and manufacturing center Thursday in Salt Lake City.

The company said the new facility provides increased capacity for its advanced carbon-composite structures for commercial and military aircraft.

The 250,000-square-foot center will add 100 employees to the company’s existing work force of 400 in Salt Lake City.

“Strong demand from our domestic and international customers has fueled this expansion,” Jim Barber, vice president and general manager of the Exelis Electronic Systems Integrated Structures business, said in a statement. “This facility leverages our core strengths and capabilities as we invest in new technologies to meet the needs of our customers and the aerospace industry.”

The company said carbon-composite structures are used increasingly as an alternative to metal structural parts on commercial and military aircraft, as well as on unmanned aerial vehicles.

These structures help decrease an aircraft’s weight and fuel consumption and increase its resilience to environmental conditions and in-flight stress.

The company has operated in Utah for 40 years.
