It’s official: federal government providing funds for Metrorail to Dulles
- March 10, 2009
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood signed a formal agreement Tuesday morning to spend $900 million in federal funds to extend Metrorail through Tysons Corner and onto Dulles International Airport.
Construction will begin soon on the $5.2 billion Silver Line. The project has been deemed vital by local and state officials, although its fate seemed doomed last year when the Federal Transit Administration questioned its ballooning costs.
After many adjustments and a good deal of political pressure, the FTA agreed in January to approve the federal money for the project.
The first phase of the project, which will extend rail from Falls Church through Tysons Corner and into Reston, is expected to be completed by 2013. The second phase, which will bring rail to the airport and further into Loudoun County, is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
