Spending by foreign tourists in Virginia grew 21 percent to a record $390 million last year, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Wednesday.
The announcement follows a report released last week that spending by domestic travelers in Virginia increased 8 percent to $20.4 billion in 2011.
“2011 was a banner year for Virginia tourism. Our tourism industry is hitting on all cylinders and providing instant revenue and quality jobs for Virginians,” McDonnell said in a statement.
Canadian visitors increased their presence and spending in Virginia. Spending from Canadians was up 11 percent last year to $148 million.
