Insurance commission urges storm victims to contact insurers
- July 6, 2012
Virginia Insurance Commissioner Jacqueline K. Cunningham is urging state residents affected by recent storms to contact their insurance company as soon as possible for help in determining what coverage that they have.
A series of deadly storms struck much of the mid-Atlantic last week left 12 people in Virginia dead and caused extensive damage.
Cunningham recommends taking pictures of damaged property, saving receipts for repair costs and protecting property from further damage. The Bureau of Insurance offers free disaster guides for homeowners and businesses on its website, http://www.scc.virginia.gov/boi/pubs.aspx.
In addition to coverage for property damage, the bureau notes, property insurance policies may include coverage for debris removal and additional living expenses.
Virginia policyholders who have questions about their homeowners, mobile home, automobile or business policies or an insurer’s handling of their claim can call its toll-free number – 1-877-310-6560 – or in Richmond at 804-371-9185.
