Hybrid vehicle company purchases Wickes Lumber Building in Danville

Hybrid Vehicles of Danville Inc. (HVDI) has purchased the Wickes Lumber Building off U.S. highway 29 in Danville for a new manufacturing facility and headquarters The purchase price of $348,000 is part of a $1.5 million investment the company plans over three years in a joint venture to produce a hybrid vehicle solution for large buses and armored vehicles for defense and security applications.
According to the Danville Office of Economic Development, the company initially will hire 25 people with plans to expand to at least 150 employees. Hybrid Vehicles has a joint venture agreement with Advanced Vehicle Research Center and has been operating in AVRC’s Cyber Park facility while negotiations on the Wickes Lumber Building were completed.
The new hybrid vehicle will have a proprietary cooling system operated by solar power. Many of the vehicles will be exported overseas where there is a growing demand for fuel efficient, armored vehicles.
The project received a $420,000 grant from the Tobacco Commission Revitalization Opportunity Fund.
