Newport News-based Huntington Ingalls Industries has created the trophy that will be awarded to the winning team in a college basketball game played next week on a U.S. aircraft carrier.

The company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division made a pewter trophy for the 2011 Quicken Loans Carrier Classic that will be presented on Veterans
Day (Nov. 11) on USS Carl Vinson in San Diego.

The game on the carrier’s flight deck will pit Michigan State University against the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

The trophy’s design was inspired by the island house, radars and mast structure of Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. About 30 shipbuilders played a role in the
trophy’s creation.

Newport News Shipbuilding built the Carl Vinson and delivered it to the Navy in February 1982.
