Gov. Bob McDonnell has announced he will seek a $5 million budget amendment to support VCU Massey Cancer Center.

The increased funding, which will be part of McDonnell’s formal budget recommendations, will help the center meet National Cancer’s Institute (NCI) requirements.

The Center has maintained its current NCI status for 35 years, but wishes attain a higher ranting of “comprehensive” status, which would provide new sources of private funding and NCI research grants.

An NCI review in the spring of 2011 will determine the Center’s status. If it can achieve comprehensive status, it will be the only hospital in the state and one of 40 hospitals nationwide to receive the rating.
