Centra Health, a Lynchburg-based health-care provider, applied for state permission to build an outpatient surgical center in Danville. The 27,000-square-foot facility would also have a 24-hour emergency department and medical imaging. If the state approves the center, work could begin in 2011 with completion in 2012.  Centra last year opened a medical practice in Danville to offer physical therapy and specialty clinics. The Danville Regional Foundation gave Averett University $175,000 to help it develop a strategic goals and objectives plan, which is expected to be released in May. (Danville Register & Bee)

Consumer Reports magazine rated Danville Regional Medical Center as a top performer in preventing central line-related bloodstream infections in its intensive care unit. Zero infections were reported for 1,074 central-line days. The national average is two per 1,000 days in cardiac ICUs and 2.3 per 1,000 days in surgical ICUs. (Danville Register & Bee)

A federal stimulus fund package of $21.5 million will be used to expand broadband services to Southside and Southwest Virginia. Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative of South Boston received $16 million to add 465 miles of high-speed line in Southern Virginia. The Virginia Tech Foundation received $5.5 million to add 110 miles of fiber-optic line between Blacksburg and Bedford. (The Martinsville Bulletin)

McGee Furniture of Danville announced plans to close. Economic pressures from the declining furniture industry, plant closings in the area and health concerns led owner Daryl McGee to close his 36-year-old business. After liquidating inventory, McGee also plans to sell his 16,000-square-foot building. Six people will lose their jobs because of the closing. (Danville Register & Bee)
