Averett University will award a $5,000 renewable scholarship to each high school student who completes the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce’s Junior Leadership Southside Program and attends Averett. The scholarships will be available beginning with the 2010-2011 class. (News release)

Bassett Furniture Industries Inc. will reopen an upholstery plant in Newton, creating an unspecified number of jobs. Plans call for production of a new line of sofas and chairs. (Media General News Service)

Stanley Furniture plans to move production from its Stanleytown facility overseas, laying off 530 workers in Henry County. Stanley said the layoffs are part of a company re-structuring plan. The company reported a $19.1 million loss in the first quarter. (News release)

Faneuil Inc., a Hampton-based provider of support solutions for customers, will invest $2.4 million in Martinsville to set up a call center to service its contract with Dominion Virginia Power. The project will create 250 jobs. (News release)

IRflex Corp., a high-tech startup company, set up operations in Danville to manufacture fiber-optic devices operating in the mid-infrared range, which can be used to help protect military aircraft from heat-seeking missiles. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
