Clark Construction Co. of Bassett received a $3.2 million contract from the Henry County Industrial Development Authority for a 100,000-square-foot shell building to be built in the Patriot Centre in a partnership between Henry County and Martinsville. Construction is expected to be complete by late summer. (Martinsville Bulletin)

Pittsylvania County moved to establish a department of economic development. Jerry Gwaltney, a consultant for the county, will lead efforts to find an economic development director. The county decided to stop funding the Pittsylvania County Economic Development Board, a 13-member entity independent of the county but supported by Pittsylvania with $265,000 annually. R.O. Harrell Inc., a bulk tanker company based in South Boston, earned awards for its safety record from several professional groups. Raffles Insurance Ltd. gave the company its highest safety award, which it has won three times in seven years. In addition, the company was cited by the American Trucking Associations, the National Tank Truck Carriers and the Virginia Trucking Association. (Danville Register & Bee)

The Schoolfield Preservation Foundation Inc., a Danville historical group, bought the former personnel headquarters building of Dan River Inc. for $150,000. The group hopes to develop a first-floor museum dedicated to Danville history and lease the top two floors. (Danville Register & Bee)

Stanley Furniture Co. of Henry County is stepping up efforts to include sustainable processes in its production. The company launched a Web site to focus on its environmental practices and is introducing new programs such as recycling of solvent from furniture production. (Martinsville Bulletin)

The Harvest Foundation gave $955,000 to the Virginia Local Initiatives Support Corp. to help efforts to develop and revitalize Martinsville and Henry County. The three-year grant will be used to form a community development corporation and to develop a plan for revitalization, especially property in and around downtown Martinsville.
