The Gaines Group PLC, a Charlottesville-based architectural firm, opened an office in Harrisonburg to serve a growing client base in the Shenandoah Valley region. The firm offers services in residential architectural, community planning and commercial development. (News release)

James Madison University announced plans to open a long-distance learning site in Front Royal in spring 2010. The 7,000-square-foot facility in the town’s technology park will be JMU’s third learning center. The others are in Roanoke and Martinsville. (Daily News-Record)

McQuay International, a global manufacturer of heating and air-conditioning systems for the commercial building industry, laid off 48 workers from its Verona plant. The company cited the depressed economic climate for the move. (News Leader)

Ntelos, a Waynesboro-based telecommunications company, will nearly double the size of its fiber-optic footprint under a purchase agreement with Allegheny Energy. Ntelos will acquire 2,200 miles of fiber lines from the electric utility in a $27 million deal. (Northern Virginia Daily)

Shenandoah Sustainable Technologies LLC, a sustainable construction company headquartered in Rockingham County, will invest $600,000 to create 72 jobs throughout Virginia during the next three years. Shenandoah offers customers geothermal heating and cooling systems, solar and wind power, and rainwater and wastewater collection systems. (News release)

Trex Co. Inc., a Winchester manufacturer of wood alternative decking and fencing products, won a decision in the U.S. Court of Appeals. The court affirmed a lower court ruling that Trex did not infringe on patents held by inventor Ron Nystrom. (Business Week)
