American Systems Inc., a Chantilly-based IT solutions provider for the government and commercial sectors, was one of 12 companies chosen to help with development, design and testing of a biometric identification system under a Department of Defense contract. (News release)

Formatta Inc., a Fairfax-based provider of data capture and integration software solutions, closed on $3 million of financing from existing investor Edison Venture Fund and Silicon Valley Bank, pushing it over $7 million in funds raised during the past year. Gyrodyne Company of America Inc., a real estate investment trust based in Long Island, N.Y., purchased Fairfax Medical Center for $13.2 million. The 59,108-square-foot facility is home to 28 medical tenants. (PRNewswire)

Inova Health System filed a letter of intent with the state of Virginia to build an 80-bed hospital on Route 50 in Loudoun County. Plans call for establishing an emergency department, intensive-care unit, operating rooms and other hospital services and support units. In addition, Inova will build a Healthplex at the intersection of state Route 659 and U.S. 50, as a cornerstone for a full-service hospital. (News release)
