Central Virginia Community College will close its Brookneal Center because of state budge cuts and falling enrollment. The facility, which opened in 2002, is one of five satellite locations in the Lynchburg region. (The News & Advance)

MeadWestvaco Corp., a Henrico County-based manufacturer of paper products, announced plans to cut 2,000 jobs throughout its operations, about 10 percent of its global work force. The company will close a plant in Enfield, Conn., with the loss of 134 jobs, and furlough 28 employees at an Atlanta plant. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

ProSeal America Inc., a subsidiary of the United Kingdom’s ProSeal Holdings Ltd., will open a sales office in Richmond. The company, which manufactures machinery and tools for the food processing industry, holds out the possibility of establishing a manufacturing operation there within the next five years. Rehig International Inc., a manufacturer of shopping carts, shut its Chesterfield County operation with the loss of 177 jobs after Bank of America pulled financing the company was depending on to make its way through bankruptcy. Rehig then asked the bankruptcy court to change its status from Chapter 11 reorganization to Chapter 7 liquidation. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

S&K Famous Brands, an Henrico County-based menswear chain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy court protection. The retailer sought permission to close about 30 of its 136 stores. S&K listed assets of $41.4 million and liabilities of $35.5 million. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Smartbox, a portable-storage company based in Richmond, bought Big Box Storage Inc. of San Diego. The move expands Smartbox’s reach to 43 markets nationwide through 26 franchisees. About 20 new jobs are expected in the Richmond area. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

The University of Virginia Law School received $1 million from television personality and animal-rights advocate Bob Barker to establish a curriculum for animal law. The gift will enable creation of the first course which will include classroom instruction, guest speakers and a writing competition. (News release)
