Dominion Virginia Power has received a $5 million grant to build a $35-million solar facility in Halifax County.
Dominion received the grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. The energy company is planning to build a four-megawatt solar and advanced energy storage facility on as much as 50 acres of land, making it the largest solar project in Virginia. The company estimates that it will take about 100 construction jobs to build, and is expected to begin operation in 2012 pending regulatory approvals.
Dominion is exploring several resources to close a gap of about 5,600 megawatts between the available supply of electricity and customer demand in 2019.
