Danville mill building to become tech center
- August 3, 2009
A former Dan River Inc. mill known locally as the White Mill has been sold to group that plans to turn it into a Danville technology center.
White Mill Development LLC, led by Spartanburg, S.C.-based Gibbs International Inc., plans to invest $400 million in creating a facility that eventually employs 400 workers earning an average of $40,000 a year.
“The site will become the focal point for the transformation of our downtown,” Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders said in a statement.
John Gieser, vice president of mergers, acquisitions and real estate for Gibbs International, said at a press conference that the building would require 12 to 18 months of work before it is ready for tenants.
No companies have signed up yet to use the building, but Gieser told the Danville Register & Bee that said he is confident of attracting tenants because of “significant demand for high-quality technology space.”
The Tobacco Commission contributed $2.45 million to the project.
