comScore Inc. is predicting a 17 percent growth in online shopping this holiday season.

The Reston-based company forecasts that online retail spending for November and December will reach $43.4 billion this year. Last year, online retail spending increased 15 percent during the holiday season.

The retail industry as a whole expects consumers’ overall holiday spending to increase 4.1 percent over last year.

“The strength leading up to and during the holiday season-to-date, in addition to a maximum 32 shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, provide the basis for what we view as a fairly optimistic outlook for the 2012 online holiday shopping season,” comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni said in a statement.

So far, the company says that e-commerce spending for the first 18 days of the holiday season was $10.1 billion, a 16 percent increase over the same period last year.
