Tidewater Community College has received a four-year, $2.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation to help launch a regional education center.
TCC will be part of consortium involving three community colleges, Northrop Grumman Corp. and BAE Systems that will create the NSF Southeast MARitime and Transportation (SMART) Center.
TCC officials said the SMART Center will help prepare the maritime work force for the 21st century.
The other schools involved in SMART include Florida State College at Jacksonville and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
