The emerging green energy sector is generating jobs nearly two and a half times faster than the overall economy, according to a report released today by the Washington-based Pew Charitable Trust.

In a first-ever count across all 50 states, Pew found that clean-energy jobs grew at a national rate of 9.1 percent between 1998 and 2007, while traditional jobs grew by 3.7 percent during this time. This sector is poised for more growth, says the report, because of increasing venture capital investment and $85 billion in direct spending and tax incentives expected from federal stimulus funds.

Virginia had nearly 17,000 clean energy jobs in 2007, higher than the national average. You can see the full report and a state-by-state breakdown here.
