Capital One’s Richard Fairbank fifth-highest paid CEO
- July 27, 2010
Richard D. Fairbank, CEO of Capital One Financial Corp. in McLean, came in at No. 5 in a Wall Street Journal report of the best-paid executives of public companies during the past decade.
In an annual review of CEO pay, the Journal said Fairbank earned $569 million during the last 10 years. Most of the money — $249 million — was earned in 2005 when Fairbank obtained big gains from options granted in 1995. Over that period, Capital One shares increased eightfold, the Journal said.
Fairbank hasn’t been paid a salary or bonus since 1997, preferring instead to be paid through options or performance-based shares.
The top paid executive was Larry Ellison, founder and CEO of software maker Oracle Corp., who received $1.8 billion in compensation.
