Black Friday online sales top $1 billion

Many U.S. consumers avoided the crowds of traditional Black Friday shopping.

U.S. retail e-commerce spending on Black Friday topped $1 billion for the first time, according to Reston-based comScore Inc., which measures online traffic.

Online sales on Friday marked the heaviest online spending day so far in 2012 and a 26 percent increase over Black Friday online shopping last year.

Consumers even did some of their shopping online shopping on Thanksgiving. Sales rose 32 percent to $633 million.

The company expects today, known as Cyber Monday, to be the heaviest online shopping day of the year with sales approaching or surpassing $1.5 billion.

E-commerce spending for the first 23 days of November-December 2012 holiday season is up 16 percent to $13.7 billion, according to comScore.
