Areva opens new center in Lynchburg
- August 4, 2009
Areva opened a new $6.5 million chemistry and materials center today at the company’s Mt. Athos plant in Lynchburg. The 8,000-square foot, two-story building is adjacent to the company’s existing building.
It will house several labs and employ 10 to 12 technical experts in nuclear power plant chemistry. The laboratories will provide services to Areva customers to assist in efforts to reduce corrosion damage to nuclear plant components and fuel. “Our new Chemistry and Materials Center will increase efficiency at current plants, helping utilities control costs that are eventually passed on to the consumer,” Areva NP Inc. CEO Michael Rencheck said in a statement.
The center represents the first phase of a planned $25 million expansion in Lynchburg. Areva NP is the North American subsidiary of the Paris-based Areva Group. In a partnership venture with Northrop Grumman, it broke ground earlier this month on a $363 million nuclear components manufacturing plant in Newport News.
