Areva consolidates fuel fabrications
- October 1, 2009
Areva is consolidating fuel fabrication operations at a facility located in Richland, Wash., a move that will affect about 150 workers at its Lynchburg plant. Fuel production operations in Lynchburg will begin moving to the Washington facility in spring 2010.
The company said all other products and services, including nuclear-related activities in Lynchburg, will not be affected by the consolidation. Susan Hess, manager of strategic communications and marketing for Areva NP Inc. in Lynchburg, said the company will try to place the 150 workers in other Areva positions. Some of those positions could be in Lynchburg, Newport News or other Areva’s other 45 locations around the U.S.
The Mount Athos road facility in Lynchburg, in operation for 40 years, has produced more than 16,000 fuel assemblies. By streamlining production at one site, Areva says the company will realize increased operational efficiency and cost savings.
