Amerigroup expands in Texas
- March 2, 2012
Virginia Beach-based Amerigroup Corp. is expanding operations in Texas.
The Fortune 500 company, which manages publicly funded health-care programs, was awarded a contract last summer by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission as a result of a competitive bidding process.
In changes that took effect on March 1, Amerigroup retains all existing programs in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston and San Antonio. It will add two service areas, Lubbock and El Paso, and add the STAR Medicaid program and CHIP children’s health-care program in San Antonio. The company will no longer serve the Corpus Christi area or participate in STAR in Austin.
Amerigroup has opened new offices in Lubbock and El Paso and created about 160 jobs in Texas, bringing the company’s total work force in the state to more than 800 full-time employees.
Amerigroup will serve new patients in 164 counties – the rural areas of west, central and northeast Texas – and add services to members in its existing areas.
Last year, Amerigroup Texas provided care coordination to approximately 632,000 members, more than any other managed care plan in the state.
