American Woodmark reports first-quarter improvement

Sales rose 8 percent and losses fell by $3 million in the first quarter of American Woodmark’s 2011 fiscal year.

The Winchester-based company said net sales increased to $109.3 million with new construction revenue rising more than 20 percent.

The company had a net loss of $3.4 million for the quarter, or 24 cents per share, down from $6.4 million, 45 cents per share, during the same period last year.

First-quarter results for fiscal year 2010 included $1.6 million in restructuring charges.

American Woodmark makes kitchen cabinets and vanities for remodeling and new home construction markets.
