AECOM leases the 15th floor of the Wells Fargo Center in downtown Norfolk
- January 11, 2012
AECOM is consolidating its Hampton Roads offices into a single location on the 15th floor of the Wells Fargo Center in downtown Norfolk. Carrie Kane, marketing manager at the company’s current office in Virginia Beach, said Wednesday that the engineering, consulting and architectural company signed a 10-year lease — with a five-year out clause — with the building’s owner, S. L. Nusbaum Realty Co. It plans to move 120 employees to the building by the spring.
“We don’t have a firm date as of yet,” said Cane. The consolidation will bring together employees from the current office at 448 Viking Drive as well as smaller offices in Hampton Roads and people who have been working from home. According to Cane, AECOM looked at a number of locations before deciding on the 22-story, Wells Fargo Center. “We like the fact that the building is LEED certified, the layout of the space, the metropolitan location,” Cane said. The building’s proximity to Norfolk’s new light-rail system “was also a positive,” she added.
Mark B. Warlick, a senior vice president for S. L. Nusbaum, said AECOM is taking 25,000 square feet in a deal that boosts the building’s occupancy rate to about 82 percent. Wells Fargo, a $160 million, mixed-use center on Monticello Avenue, opened in 2010. The 15th floor was initially leased to LTD Hospitality Group, a hotel development and management company in Chesapeake. However, as the economy slowed, LTD decided to remain in Chesapeake. Other major tenants include Dixon Hughes Goodman, an accounting firm and the law firm of Willcox and Savage. Wells Fargo was the first high-rise office building in Hampton Roads to achieve gold certification under the U S. Green Building Council’s LEED program (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
AECOM, based out of Los Angeles, is a Fortune 500 firm that reported $8 billion in revenue in 2011. Worldwide, it has 45,000 employees in 130 countries. Besides the new office in Norfolk, AECOM has two other offices in Virginia in Arlington and Roanoke. Last year, it ranked as the No. 1 design firm overall in a ranking of the Top 500 design firms by Engineering News-Record.
