A nudge for workplace wellness

An interactive way to better health is getting a try out at companies in Richmond and Chattanooga. The two cities are test markets for a new work place-centered, mobile health app that challenges employees to exercise, eat right, drink water and get enough sleep. Marketed to business owners and human resource managers, “Nudge” encourages colleagues, through friendly competition, to get healthier.
“The premise of Nudge is to make it fun and rewarding to log in and record lifestyle activity,” said Mac Gambill, Nudge’s co-founder and CEO. Graphics, encouraging statements and the progress of other teammates are intended to spur on users, who may be working toward a personal goal or company challenge.
According to Gambill, Nudge promotes team dynamics at work to achieve healthy lifestyle habits in and out of the office. Employees sign up for the app at participating companies. From the user’s perspective, Nudge works like an app although it’s built in HTML 5 to allow access from any platform and device.
“We’ve seen results in just the first four weeks,” said Human Resources Director Donna Williamson at Cary Street Partners in Richmond, where about 50 people have signed up. “ …. We really like the way it encourages people to eat the right foods and start or maintain an exercise program. The system is simple and fits easily into our employees’ busy schedules.”
