284 Virginia companies make Inc. 5000 list

Two hundred eighty-four Virginia companies made the 2012 list of the nation’s fastest-growing businesses.

Four companies, all based in Northern Virginia, were among the top 100 firms on the Inc. magazine list:  No. 21, Zantech IT Services in McLean; No. 23, in Dumfries; No. 35,  OBXtek in Vienna; and No. 80, Innotion Enterprises in Arlington.

The ranking is based on companies’ revenue growth over the past three years.

Zantech, FederalConference and OBXtek ranked first, second and fourth among fast-growing government services firms while Innotion was second among real estate companies.

Another 34 Virginia companies were in the top 500 businesses on the Inc. list.

Virginia ranked fourth in the country in the number of companies on the Inc. 5000, trailing only California with 680, Texas with 380, New York state with 318, and Florida with 296.

The Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, which includes parts of Northern Virginia and Maryland, had 347 companies listed, second only to the New York City area with 350. Zantech, FederalConference and OBXtek ranked first through third among Inc. companies in the Washington area.

Among neighboring states: Maryland had 161 companies on the Inc. list, while North Carolina had 127, Tennessee had 88, Kentucky had 47, and West Virginia had three.

Zantech, founded in 2007, had a three-year growth rate of 7,331 percent, posting a 2011 revenue of $17.8 million. The company, which has 55 employees, provides IT services to government agencies, including the Departments of Homeland Security, Education, Agriculture and Defense.

FederalConference had a growth rate of 6,978 percent, with 2011 revenue of $21.7 million. Started in 2006, the company has 46 employees. It plans and executes more than 3,000 government events annually.

OBXtek’s three-year revenue growth rate was 5,779 percent. Its 2011 revenue total was $6.3 million,. Founded in 2008, OBXtek provides a wide array of IT services including planning and integration, engineering, network management and operations, and video telecommunications. The company has 92 employees.

Innotion had 2011 revenues of $35.8 million, up 3,500 percent in three years. Begun in 1997 as an IT company, most of its work now is in real estate owned (REO) property management, marketing and sales.

Innotion also made the Inc. list last year at No. 194. Zantech, FederalConference and OBXtek are new to the this year’s list.
