Ten Virginia companies have made Fortune magazine’s annual list of the World’s Most Admired Companies.

They were among 358 companies selected for the list, which was led by Apple for the fifth straight year. Google was in second place, and Amazon was No. 3.

None of the Virginia companies ranked in the list’s top 50.

The Virginia list includes: Altria Group, Richmond; Booz Allen Hamilton, McLean; CACI International, Arlington; Capital One Financial Corp. McLean; Dominion Resources, Richmond; General Dynamics, Falls Church; MeadWestvaco (MWV), Richmond; Norfolk Southern, Norfolk; Northrop Grumman, Falls Church; and Universal Corp., Richmond.

Altria, the parent company of cigarette manufacturer Philip Morris USA, had the highest overall score of the 10 companies. In evaluating the 358 companies on nine criteria ranging from people management to global competitiveness, Altria ranked fourth in social responsibility and 10th in financial soundness.

To appear on the Most Admired list, a company had to score in the top half of its industry survey.

To create the list, Fortune’s survey partner Hay Group started with about 1,400 companies, including the 1,000 largest companies in the U.S, In drawing up lists of top companies in 58 industries,
Hay asked executives, directors and analysts to rate companies in their industry on the nine criteria.

In coming up with top 50 companies overall, Hay asked the 3,855 people responding to the industry surveys to pick 10 companies they admired most.
