Kidde Residential and Commercial, a Mebane,
N.C. supplier of fire safety products, plans to move
its Albemarle County
operations to Mexico,
laying off 92 out of about 100 workers employed by Badger
Fire Protection. Kidde will move another 133 positions
from Mebane to Mexico. (The

Lillian Vernon Corp., a Virginia
Beach mail-order retailer, converted 76 of the 570
employees at its distribution and call center to part-time
status. As customer ordering habits shifted online
and closer to the holiday season, the company found

Rowe Furniture, a furniture manufacturing subsidiary
of The Rowe Cos. of McLean, shut
down a production line and laid off 37 workers in Elliston.
The company also cut 21 jobs in Poplar
Bluff, Mo. (The Roanoke Times)
Sara Lee Branded Apparel announced plans to
shut down production of t-shirts and underwear fabric
in Galax, cutting 332 jobs in the process. An analysis
of production capacity led to the decision to cut the
Galax jobs, as well as another 178 in Eden, N.C. (The Roanoke
