Google Inc., a Mountain View, Calif. Internet
search and content services company, invested $1 billion
in America Online Inc., a Dulles-based Internet
services provider. The deal, giving Google a 5 percent
stake in AOL, will bring the companies together to
enhance their share of the growing online advertising
market. The companies will share in technologies such
as instant messaging and extend their business model
of relying on paid advertising by drawing large audiences

Cadmus Communications Corp. of Richmond, agreed
to provide its RadpidRights digital rights management
system to the British Library. Customers who purchase
distribution of journal articles from the library will
receive the material in secure PDF documents. (PR

Sentara Healthcare, a Hampton Roads-based health-care
provider, agreed to give Eastern Virginia Medical
School $25 million over the next five years. The
funds will be used to support residency programs and

Ukrops's Super Markets Inc. of
Richmond signed a deal with Benevolink, an Atlanta-based
supporter
of corporate-consumer charitable partnerships, to turn
its Golden Gift community-giving project into a year-round
program. Consumers who purchase Ukrop's-branded products
can earn funds and target them to participating charities.
Ukrop's will donate up to $400,000 annually to be shared
