Avid LLC plans to open a regional office in the Riverstone Technology Building in Riverstone Technology Park in Halifax County. The Yorktown-based company provides design and software support for U.S. government agencies and aerospace companies. (Danville Register & Bee)

Bristol Virginia Utilities and the Bristol community received the 2008 Smart Community Award for areas with populations of fewer than 200,000 from Last Mile magazine. The award is based on various criteria, including efforts to increase broadband access, further economic development and innovation in network deployment. Tucson, Ariz., was cited for areas of greater than 200,000 in population. (News release)

The Carlisle School, a Martinsville-based private school, will expand its satellite program in Danville by moving into the former WDVA radio station building. The move will double available space and allow for an increase in the preschool programs, as well as staff. (The Martinsville Bulletin)

The Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce received a five-star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, one of only 41 chambers out of 6,936 nationwide to be so honored. Chambers are judged on nine areas, including government affairs, finance, communications and human resources. The accreditation is good for five years. (Danville Register & Bee)

The Landmark Group, a Winston-Salem, N.C., development company, is preparing to open The Lynn Street Lofts, a group of 37 loft-style apartments in Danville’s Tobacco Warehouse District. Landmark used tax-credit programs for the project to price the units for lower-income families without using subsidized rent programs. (Danville Register &

TMI AutoTech Inc., manufacturer of the Ariel Atom 3 race car, will locate its North American headquarters at the Virginia International Raceway in Alton. The company will invest $1.5 million in the move and staff most of its operation locally. The move will also allow the public to try its hand at driving a race car on the VIR through TMI’s Ariel Atom Experience. (Danville Register & Bee)
