Alpha Natural Resources boosts coal export capacity
Apr 21, 2008

Abingdon-based Alpha Natural Resources has increased its ownership in one of the country’s largest coal ports.

Alpha now owns 40.6 percent of Dominion Terminal Associations, which has a nameplate capacity of 20 million tons. With the additional ownership, Alpha is now the largest owner of the coal port and increased its coal export capacity from 6.5 million tons to 8 million tons.

“Strategically this move should further secure our position as the largest exporter of high-quality metallurgical coals from the United States to the world’s steel industry,” Alpha CEO and Chairman Michael J. Quillen said in a statement.

Peabody Energy and subsidiaries of Arch Coal Inc. own the rest of Dominion Terminal Associations.
