Virginia’s list of Fortune 500 companies grows

Virginia has 19 companies, two more than last year, on Fortune magazine’s list of the nation’s 500 largest corporations.

Companies new to the Virginia list include Altria Group in Richmond, Computer Sciences in Falls Church and AES in Arlington, One company, Sprint, fell off the Virginia list after transferring its headquarters from Reston to Overland Park, Kan. Another Virginia company, Richmond-based Performance Food Group, will leave the state list next year after going private in a scheduled buyout.

The largest Virginia company on the Fortune list is Freddie Mac, ranked 54th with annual revenue of $43 billion. The next largest company from the commonwealth is Altria Group, the parent company of Philip Morris USA. Altria moved from New York to Henrico County in March after spinning off its international tobacco unit. The company ranked 61st with revenue of $38 billion.

In the larger Fortune 1,000 list, Virginia had 32 companies this year, up from 29 in 2007. The additional newcomer is BearingPoint in McLean.
