Eight Virginia companies make Fortune’s list of most-admired firms

Eight Virginia companies made the grade this year on Fortune magazine’s report card of America’s Most Admired Companies. Two companies, LandAmerica Financial Group in Henrico County and CarMax Inc. in Goochland County, ranked No. 1 within their industry categories of mortgage services and automotive retailing services, respectively.

Virginia’s showing is stronger this year than in 2007 when six companies made the list. The other companies on the 2008 list are: CACI International of Arlington, Gannett of McLean, NVR of Reston, Performance Food Group of Goochland County, Dominion Resources of Richmond and Smithfield Foods of Smithfield.

Topping the list is Apple, which rose six places from 2007 to beat out Berkshire Hathaway and General Electric for the No. 1 spot.

Fortune’s list is based on surveys of executives, directors, and analysts who assess companies in eight areas: innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment and quality of products/services.
