The State Corporation Commission will hold a June 24 public hearing in Richmond on Dominion Virginia Power’s request to increase electricity rates on July 1.
The utility has asked the SCC for permission to raise rates to 3.893 cents-per-kilowatt-hour from 2.232. The average residential customer would pay an additional $16.61 on a monthly bill.
Dominion says the increase is needed to cover increasing fuel costs to run its power plants. Under law, the rate increase would be used only for fuel costs.
