The Virginia Department of Transportation and the U.S. Navy have signed an agreement so that work can begin on the Interstate 564 intermodal connector.
The $169 million project will connect the existing interstate through Naval Station Norfolk and to the Port of Virginia’s Norfolk International Terminals.
The new road is designed to provide a safer high-speed highway to decrease congestion, remove heavy truck traffic from area streets and improve access to the naval base.
VDOT has already done preliminary engineering, environmental work, right-of-way acquisition and utility design for the project. The agency expects to advertise the work in the first quarter of 2013.
“Extending and realigning I-564 will provide the starting point for a future crossing under the Elizabeth River to Interstate 664,” Transportation Secretary Sean T. Connaughton said in a statement.
The I-564 intermodal connector will have four lanes with a grass median and include new bridges and overpasses, exit and entrance ramps, stormwater management areas and other related infrastructure.
