The Wise County Board of Supervisors called an emergency meeting on Friday to approve a resolution in support of Dominion Resources’ proposed coal-burning plant.
A call to support the resolution at a regular meeting Thursday night failed after some supervisors wanted more time to consider Dominion’s proposed changes.
The resolution asks the state to approve the proposed $1.86 billion Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center. The plant is expected to bring 250 permanent jobs to the region and a boost in tax revenue for Wise.
About 300 people attended the State Corporation Commission’s public hearing last week. Opponents are concerned about the plant’s pollution of air and water in the region. The SCC will hold a hearing on Feb. 5 to hear expert testimony.
Dominion says the project is necessary to support demand for electricity. The power company plans to use the latest clean-coal technology and wants the plant operational by 2012.
