The wireline telephone business of nTelos Holding Corp. has officially announced its new name: Lumos Networks.

Waynesboro-based nTelos announced last December that its wireline business would be spun off as a separate, publicly traded company. The company’s wireless business will keep the nTelos name.

In announcing the name in a news release, Michael B. Moneymaker, the president of Lumos Networks said, “ This new brand creates a stronger identity for our wireline high-speed data, broadband, voice, and IP services.  We are excited about this change and the opportunities it presents for our customers, the communities we serve and our employees.”

The company introduced the name in events Thursday in Waynesboro, Covington, Daleville in Virginia and in Charleston, W.Va.

“Lumos” is derived from a Latin word for light or illumination. Company officials said the name is consistent with the company’s intent to provide leading-edge data communication products over its fiber-optic network.

The company said customers will begin to see the its new logo on its materials over the next few months.  Customer service, rates and network coverage will not change in connection with the rebranding process.

Based in Waynesboro, Lumos Networks will serve Virginia, West Virginia and portions of Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, and Maryland over a 5,800 route-mile fiber network.
