W. J. Vakos & Co., one of the Fredericksburg area’s most prominent developers, has opened a commercial and residential real estate brokerage arm. Initially the new company will focus on sales and leasing in the Fredericksburg area, with plans to increase its presence in other regions in the future.

Company president Bill Vakos III said in an interview that Vakos decided to go with a full-service brokerage because “it’s a great opportunity for us to serve the greater Fredericksburg region and our other holdings in Tidewater and Richmond.”

Vakos Real Estate is located in the Southpoint II shopping center in Spotsylvania County, a Vakos development. In the Fredericksburg area, the 36-year-old company also has developed Southpoint I and Spotsylvania Courthouse Village. In Richmond, it owns 801 East Main Street, and in Chesapeake Vakos is seeking rezoning for a mixed-use town center, ranging in size from 1.5 to 3 million square feet, at Greenbrier Square.

Brian Cunningham has been hired as president and principal broker for Vakos Real Estate. Cunningham was most recently with Realty World Select in Fredericksburg. Before that, he worked for Advantis in Richmond, before Advantis closed its office there.
