Virginia Business magazine won a third-place, bronze award for its use of photography and illustrations in a national editorial competition. The Los Angeles-based Alliance of Area Business Publications announced winners in its 2011 Editorial Excellence Awards during a conference that ended Sunday.  Judges cited the magazine for using “wonderfully creative illustrations and large photographs.” They particularly liked an illustration by freelance illustrator Kerry Talbott, which ran with a cover story in March 2010 about the state’s use of stimulus funds, entitled “The Big Fix.”

Virginia Business submitted 10 examples of work from 2010, including cover illustrations as well as photos and illustrations that ran with other stories in the magazine.  Also receiving recognition for the portfolio was Editor Robert Powell, Art Director Adrienne Reaves-Taylor, and the magazine’s longtime freelance photographer Mark Rhodes.  The alliance received 487 entries from 45 publications in this year’s competition and presented 108 awards.
