Japan Tobacco International is donating $400,000 to the City of Danville for a fountain that will become the focal point for the city’s Tobacco Warehouse District.
The downtown fountain is intended to commemorate the legacy of the tobacco industry as an economic engine in the city for four centuries, according to Steve Daniels, president of Japan Tobacco International, Leaf Services U.S.A.
City officials said the fountain will highlight a renovated area along the Dan River that is a key part of its River District plan.
“This gift from JTI is clear evidence that the business community is supportive of the renaissance of the River District,” David Parrish, Danville deputy city manager, said in a statement.
Further renovation in the area is planned along Main, Union, Bridge and Craghead streets.
Japan Tobacco International announced a joint venture with Hail & Cotton and J.E.B. International to process domestic tobacco in Danville in 2009. The operation opened the following year.
