The Hotel Roanoke now offers spa services on-site through On Location Spa Services of Roanoke. The services are unique to hotels in Southwest Virginia and help the hotel reach a niche market. After further study, the hotel will consider whether to add a complete spa facility. (The Roanoke Times)

Luna Innovations Inc., a Roanoke-based biotechnology company, received a $2.1 million, three-year contract from the National Institutes of Health for work on a therapy to inhibit the ability of pathogens to establish infection and survive inside host organisms. The company also won a $3.9 million subcontract from General Dynamics, a Falls Church defense contractor, to support work on improving the performance of nanomaterials in military applications. Optical Cable Corp., a Roanoke producer of cable and connectivity solutions, bought Superior Modular Products Inc. SMP Data Communications will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Optical Cable. The move will broaden Optical’s product offerings to include fiber optic and copper connectivity. (News release)

Rowe Fine Furniture, a manufacturer headquartered in Elliston, invested $500,000 to expand its Salem Frame business unit. In addition to kiln drying of fresh cut lumber, the company can now offer grading, trimming, ripping and packaging of lumber.      (The Roanoke Times)


Biométhodes, a French-based biotech company, signed an option-to-lease agreement with Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties Inc. for technologies to convert biomass into bioethanol and biohydrogen. A biorefinery in Virginia is envisioned in order to make advances in the process for converting biomass into ethanol and other co-products. (News release)
