Calling transportation “one of the most critical issues facing Virginia,” state Sen. John Watkins, (R- Powhatan County), has scheduled a town hall meeting Jan. 2 to discuss legislation he has proposed to deal with Virginia’s transportation problems.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Koger Conference Center in Chesterfield County.

“There have been no substantial changes with regard to the dedicated revenue for transportation since 1986,” Watkins said in a statement. “The time has come that we must revisit the dedicated revenue stream and provide for future maintenance and construction needs.”

Watkins plans to sponsor a bill in the 2013 General Assembly that would establish and adjust sources of revenue for budget appropriations of the commonwealth and its localities.  His proposal also calls for raising the state’s gas tax, lowering the income tax and eliminating tax credits and exemptions. The measure is projected to generate $773 million in 2013, its first year, if passed. The money would be used to pay for repairs and maintenance of Virginia’s existing highways.

The meeting will include presentations by the Senate Finance staff and a question and answer period.
