The new parent company of former Media General newspapers is eliminating 105 jobs, including 33 at the News & Messenger in Manassas, which is being closed, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The remaining 72 positions –mostly corporate staff positions— are scattered among properties in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama.

The Times-Dispatch reported that the News & Messenger, which has circulation of about 10,000, will publish its last issue in late December .

Doug Hiemstra, president and chief executive officer of Omaha, Neb.-based World Media Enterprises Inc., said the newspaper has lost money for a number of years, and the new ownership group was “unable to come up with a scenario that would result in a likelihood of profitable operations there.”

World Media Enterprises is the division created earlier this year by Berkshire Hathaway Inc. after it purchased 63 newspapers previously owned by Richmond-based Media General Inc.

The properties included eight daily newspapers in Virginia including the Times-Dispatch and the News & Messenger.
