The $5 billion plan to extend Metrorail to Dulles International Airport is expected to be approved today by federal transportation officials, according to The Washington Post.

The approval is a complete reversal of an opinion issued in January by federal officials. They cited the project’s growing cost and its additional burden on the underfunded Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority as reasons for not supporting the project.

Unnamed sources told the Post that the letter will say the project has met requirements for cost efficiency, construction and expected ridership. They also told the Post that the project could now move into a final design stage and is closer to receiving $900 million from the federal government.

Officials are expected to send a letter to Congress stating their approval.

The project includes extending Metrorail through the busy Tysons Corner area in Fairfax and then heading to Dulles.
