Medical Automation Systems sold to Alere Inc.

Charlottesville-based Medical Automation Systems (MAS), a major provider of information management systems for point-of-care testing, has been acquired by Massachusetts-based Alere Inc.
Founded by Greg Menke, a graduate of the University of Virginia, MAS employs more than 100 people in Charlottesville. The company licensed medical software technology from U.Va. in 1994
The company’s flagship product is RALS-Plus (Remote Automated Laboratory Systems), a multi-instrument, information management system for bedside laboratory testing.
Alere expects to retain substantially all MAS employees. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Alere, based in Waltham, Mass., products and services focus on infectious disease, cardiology, oncology, toxicology and women’s health.
