The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors today voted to participate in the funding of a Metrorail extension to Washington Dulles International Airport.
The board’s 5-4 vote means the county will commit nearly $270 million to the second phase of the Silver Line construction, which will link the transit system to the airport and create two stations in eastern Loudoun.
Without the county’s contribution, the second part of the $6 billion Silver Line project was in doubt.
On a separate 7-2 vote, the supervisors approved a plan to create a special tax district by January 2013 to finance the county’s share of construction funds.
The board’s decision opens the way for the soliciting of bids for the project. Construction could begin next year and be completed in 2018.
The Silver Line’s first phase runs through Tysons Corner to Reston.
