Mahfuz Ahmed says his company, Digital Intelligence Systems Corp., is on track to reach a goal of $1 billion in annual revenue by 2017. “In 2008 and 2009 we grew 30 percent each year. This year
 we will be more than 30 percent,” says Ahmed who founded the global IT staffing and consulting company in 1994 at the age of 23.
The McLean-based company, known as DISYS, expected to record $155 million to $165 million in revenue for 2010. That’s not bad for a business that started in a basement with two employees and
$4,000 in initial capital.
In 2010, Ahmed was named a regional finalist in Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year program for the Washington area. He also was a finalist in the 40 Under 40 Awards sponsored by the
Washington Business Journal. In addition, DISYS received SmartCEO magazine’s 2010 Future50 Award, which recognizes the area’s fastest-growing companies. DISYS now has more than 1,800 employees and nine offices in the United States. It started expanding internationally in 2007, adding offices in Brazil, Singapore, the Netherlands and Thailand.
In 2009, international business represented 2 percent of the company’s $107 million in revenues. “This year it jumped to 9 percent,” Ahmed says. “We offer the same services, but our services are more geared to outsourcing and consulting. In the U.S., IT staffing represents 70 percent of our revenues; internationally it’s 30 percent.”
One of the company’s core principles is never to promise what it can’t deliver. “We look for ways to get things done rather than talking about why it can’t be done,” Ahmed says.
Each year, the company sets aside 20 percent of its gross profits to try out four or five new ideas from the leadership team. “We fund a few of those ideas,” Ahmed says. “We are constantly trying to do and find things that make our services better and our company more attractive.”
